Brief History

The origin and development of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Mitigation.

How SETPOM Started

The Society for Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Mitigation (SETPOM) was established to serve as a meeting point for various groups of environmental stakeholders especially academicians, regulators, industrialists and consultants to promote good environmental practices and share best practices.

The inaugural meeting of the society was held on 21st September, 2011 at the University of Lagos, Nigeria at the instance of Prof. Adebayo Otitoloju in order to provide a direction and set the guiding principles for the establishment of the society.

Following the inaugural meeting, several meetings were held between September 2011 and December 2012 by the founding members before a final decision was made in December 2012 to formally register the society with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

Foundation meetings held by the founding members to shape the society’s direction, principles and professional structure.

December 2012

Decision taken to formally register SETPOM with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

During the foundation meetings, it was agreed that in all its deliberations, the approach to decision making for the society will be transparent and democratic at all times. The society is also envisaged as a global professional environmental society with appreciation of local and regional perspectives.

In order to achieve its vision of promoting, encouraging and rewarding good environmental practices, the executives of the society are to organize annual conferences, webinars, seminars, and workshops. The society will also reward individuals, products, companies and government bodies for actions and activities that are considered best practices and environmentally friendly.

The major publications of the society are the Journal of Environmental Toxicology & Pollution Mitigation (JETPOM) and SETPOM e-Newsletter. The society is constituted to be run by a Global Working Council (GWC) which devolves power to national and local chapters.
